I'm of the opinion that the two-seat bodywork works really well, with an aggressive, pugnacious look that reeks of horsepower. On the road, folks might try to get close to see the amx badges and figure out what it is, but the rear end with its wide-set taillights is unmistakable. There's plenty of chrome, all of it in good to excellent condition, although the restoration is now a few years old. Amc wasn't even pretending this was a 2+2 and just did away with the back seat altogether. With two buckets, the all-black interior is intimate but clearly driver-oriented. The center-mounted radio is a cool throwback to the earliest days of automotive entertainment systems, although at some point it has been upgraded to an am/fm/cassette head unit. We're inclined to believe that the interior is mostly original, and with that in mind, the seats only show mild signs of use and the carpets are in surprisingly good condition. The steering wheel has a few cracks but the design is very cool and there's even a good-sized trunk with its original mat and space-saver spare, plus a ton of storage behind the seats. Power comes from amc's top-of-the-line 390, which made 325 horsepower in the amx. Augmented by an edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and matching aluminum intake manifold, it's a torquey powerplant that makes the amx one of the most potent cars of the era. The engine bay is neatly dressed in appropriate finishes and colors, including corporate turquoise paint on the block itself. A few chrome pieces add some sparkle and the condition of the inner fenders is more evidence that this car led an easy life in a warm climate. It's backed by the aforementioned 4-speed manual transmission that delivers snappy shifts up and down and makes the most of the 390's generous torque curve. Underneath, it's in very good order with the floors and major support braces showin. AM/FM

Unlike most of the other pony cars, amc's entry was strictly a 2-seater, making the amx somewhat of an anomaly. For that reason alone it should be highly collectable, but for reasons we don't really understand, these great cars remain in the shadows of the other players. The bodywork was restored a few years ago, and with bright red paint and white stripes, the chunky amx looks fast and lean. Details like the chrome bumpers, rocker panel moldings, and special amx emblems are all in excellent condition and there are no deviations from stock specifications other than the high-quality workmanship, which wasn't always available at amc. The interior is really what sets the amx apart, both from the rest of the muscle car pack and from its siblings at amc. Far more upscale and aimed at a different audience, it uses funky plaid seat inserts to give it a sophisticated look that's perfect for the late 1960s. A console, some woodgrained details, and just two seats certainly make it exclusive and the restoration took care of most of the interior bits, too. The original am radio is still in the dash and the trunk is fitted with more black carpets and carries a full-sized spare tire. Amc didn't stamp vin's on their blocks back then, but this original t-code car definitely still houses a proper period-stamped drivetrain, that after inspection, leaves little doubt with us that this is a numbers matching car, even if a '68 amx can never truly be called as such. It looks fairly stock aside from the brightly colored ignition system components, and even carries a correct set of decals on the original air cleaner. Power steering and brakes, plus the rare but super fun shift command 3-speed automatic transmission, mean that this car is very user-friendly and the burly v8 sounds spectacular exhaling through a dual exhaust system with new mufflers. Comoptions:description:this is a very hard to find 1968 amc rebel 770 cross country wagon. From what we have observed, this may possibly be the only one for sale in the united states. This rebel comes with the original two tone paint scheme tahiti turquoise metallic with frost white insert. These wagons typically came standard with a six cylinder engine, but this one has the optional and more powerful typhoon 290ci 225 hp v8 engine with a 4bbl carburetor which makes this car even more special. The dual exhaust with the chrome tips extends out the rear quarter panels has a nice deep rumble. The odometer reads 2,155 but this is actually 102,155 documented miles. Other options include power steering, power brakes, am radio and 3-speed automatic with shift on the column. The transmission has recently been rebuilt and it shifts through the gears smoothly. The carburetor also has been rebuilt. The engine compartment shows a new a/c compressor and new valve covers but other than that, it looks original and unmolested. The interior is black cloth and vinyl and we believe this to be original but we cannot verify. Additional accessories that were recently added for convenience is the aftermarket voltmeter gauge and tachometer attached to the steering column. There is a current am/fm cd radio and speaker installed under the dash. The original am radio is still in place and the dash is in good condition with no cracks. All the original gauges are in place and the speedometer, odometer, gas gauge, temp gauge all work. Even the cigarette lighter works! The 770 series features the custom steering wheel, rear ash trays and glove box lock. The rear tailgate features the electric tailgate window that slides down into the tailgate. The cargo area has a hidden stowage compartment and the back seat folds down for extra storage and there is an original roof rack. The glass looks good and we believe it is original. The doors all open and close solidly and the interior door panels are in good condition and all windows operate normally. There are a couple of splitting seams in the driver’s seat and the black carpet is in good condition. The wheels are the rally style and the tires have good rubber on them.
