Sure, chevys are popular and cadillacs are flashy, but nobody could compare with buick's brand of style. It's not subtle, but the dramatic look only gets better with bold colors like the white-over-burgundy combination shown here. And yes, we really need to talk about the chrome, because there's enough here to outfit a fleet of lesser cars, and while there are a few blemishes here and there, it all looks pretty good from 10 feet away. From the fine-toothed grille to the sweep spear running along the sides to the wonderfully ornate taillight housings that put a bright bit of punctuation on the car, this century really looks dressed up. The interior is a little more subtle, but only a little. Two-tone black and red upholstery combines a '50s sensibility with bold colors that make it look expensive, which was surely the point. The steering wheel is thin and almost delicate, especially on such a big brute, and the fully functional gauges are arrayed in two round pods with secondary controls below. And as a buick, it's got a massive trunk with correct side panels, what might be the original mats, and a full-sized spare tire. The century was always buick's best performer, and this hardtop carries a big 322 cubic inch v8 called the nailhead thanks to its nearly horizontal valve covers. The name of the game was torque, and the undisputed champion in '54 was the nailhead, so this car moves like it's got corvette dna in its veins. It's wearing correct corporate turquoise engine enamel and they didn't take many liberties with the hardware, which still uses the original heavy-duty air cleaner and cast iron exhaust manifolds. There's a reliable and incomparably smooth dynaflow automatic transmission behind it, and it does take some getting used to but it's pure buick at its best because the ride is unlike anything else. Finished in code 14 silver mist, it's one of the less common gs colors and truly emphasizes what a special car the grand sport really was. Dressed for success, the big buick was upscale instead of a street brawler, and brought serious class to a segment that seemed to only care about horsepower. The restoration brought this one to a very high level, with a great gloss on the surface and straight, clean sheetmetal underneath. There are a few signs of use, but for a car that can generate speed as easily as this one does, they're surprisingly minor, and we love the way the silver look without a vinyl top, which was a familiar sight on buicks that year. Those unique gs grilles are superb, the red-accented rocker panel trim is bright, and the twin-snorkel hood adds to the racy vibe. The sucker looks fast just sitting still. Buick's big advantage, aside from massive torque, was its luxury background. There's an am ratio that's period-correct and blends right in and as a buick, factory a/c was part of the package, although this system needs to be serviced. The trunk is solid an clean with painted floor pans that leave problems no place to hide. The gs's claim to fame was the massive 455 cubic inch v8 under the hood. Unlike a lot of its peers, it hasn't been upgraded with aftermarket parts, and still carries its oem intake manifold, carburetor, heads, and exhaust manifolds. Nicely detailed with dante red paint on the valve covers, a correct twin-snorkel air cleaner, and accurate finishes throughout, it looks quite fresh and runs great. It's backed by a stout th400 3-speed automatic transmission that has also been rebuilt at some point, and there's a fresh magnaflow exhaust that sounds fantastic. They've also added a r. It highlights all of the design lines. Some of these were created by Buick fifty years ago, like the full-length body crease; and others are part of the new performance image, like the custom cowl hood. And speaking of the hood, take some time to notice the darker paint applied there. This not only covers the front area, but also detail lovers will notice it flows onto the A and B-pillars to create a subtle two-tone effect. The final piece to this custom performance package are the Coys wheels that are staggered in size so the larger rear ones tuck under the wheel well and really send a message about where the power is being sent to the ground. The front seats are borrowed from a more modern Cadillac CTS-V. So not only are they leather with a comfortable suede insert, but also they are power adjustable and offer far superior bolstering than anything that came out of the '60s. They all provide crystal-clear and complete info, which is just another indication that there is something really special under the hood. It's a 540 cubic-inch V8 from the wizards at Merlin. It takes a huge investment for one of these monster motors (and we even have the receipts to prove it.) But more than just big and bulletproof, this has been further enhanced with more go-fast goodies like an Edelbrock intake and a Quick Fuel carburetor. Plus, it's backed up by reliable components like an aluminum radiator, electric fan, Holley electric fuel pump, steel braided lines, and full MSD ignition. The materials and patterns look quite authentic, with textured fabric and pink vinyl on the seats and door panels, and slightly darker carpets to help keep it anchored. The instrument panel and all the gauges have been restored, and the factory am radio still works. There's also an auxiliary oil pressure gauge stashed under the dash where nobody will see it but the driver. The trunk looks fairly original, with factory-issued mat, a full-sized spare, and even a wheel protector as it was when new. Buick's 215 cubic inch all-aluminum v8 was an interesting experiment that went on to fame overseas powering a myriad of vehicles for land rover. Making a stout 185 horsepower, it's certainly no slouch in the lightweight skylark, and thanks to its modern aluminum construction, it definitely helps tighten up the handling. The engine bay is tidy, although not detailed for competition, but shows off a lot of correct details like the oversized air cleaner with bright red decals, bellows-type power brake booster, and mini nailhead valve covers. A 3-speed automatic handles gear changes, and the chassis is almost entirely rust-free, particularly the floors which are remarkably well preserved thanks to easy living down south.
