Comoptions:description:1950 ford deluxe convertible 1949 is the year the first postwar cars were built and is particularly significant for ford. Losing market share through the 1930’s, partly due to improved competition and because henry ford staunchly resisted updating an antiquated suspension system, the company emerged after the war in declining financial health. But, in the late 1940’s, the company hired a designer by the name of george walker, the so-called “cellini of chrome”, who worked in the shadow of the limelight cast by his competitor, harley earl. Walker was hired for his streamline design concepts that would become, with the help of moonlighting studebaker designers, the 1949 ford. The automotive press in los angeles labeled ford’s postwar car the “shoebox” because of its box-like shape, which ford carried over with minor grille changes to the 1950 and 1951 models. With its clean, simple lines integrating the fenders with the body and accented by a dramatic and artful bullet nose grille, the shoebox was a complete departure from the 1948 model. Interestingly, the convertible, with its wrap-around design and small rear window, became the darling of the design. It was offered in the custom deluxe v8 series and, as such, benefitted from the stylistic touches of ford’s top trim models – two sun visors, armrests, and additional chrome accents were all standard. The 1950 ford was very instrumental to the company’s survival and success. While it retained the previous year’s “fashion car of the year” styling, it was said to feature “50 improvements for ‘50”. Handsome remaining examples such as this one are highly collectable as they benefit from these numerous improvements and continue to be very enjoyable, drivable automobiles, especially when offered in stylish convertible form. Weight only a limited number of the “shoebox” convertibles, in this condition remain, as most examples have been “hot-rodded”. This classic “shoebox” ford is in absolutely excellent condition throughout. With the numerous options, coupled with overdrive, it is a pleasure to drive. It is as “straight as an arrow” and garners all the “oohs and aahs” anytime out. Vintage ford aficionados consid.
